SmartPool at SIAM 2023
AMSTERDAM March 2 – 2023 – SmartPool, the EPBF-project in which students put maths and physics into practice at a pool table, and where it is taught in a playful way that technical subjects have all kinds of fun and practical applications, was present at SIAM CSE 2023 Conference in the RAI in Amsterdam.
SIAM is the largest organization in the world for industrial and applied mathematics, and the conference on computational science and engineering is their largest conference.
There were presentations from Ine Helvik EPBF, Jenny Sendova Bulgaria, Maria Hadjimina Cyprus and Erik van Haren the Netherlands.
More than 50 participants received an explanation about SmartPool at the pool table.
SmartPool Pilot 2 in The Netherlands in the Media

SmartPool Europe, de Europese vertaling van het succesvolle SmartPool/SmartCue project van de KNBB, is volop in de media! Na artikelen in Trouw en op NU.nl, was er op 13 februari 2023 op RTL4 een mooie reportage op EditieNL. De video hiervan zie u hier terug, de gehele uitzending van die dag (met leuke gesprekjes tussen de commentatoren over poolen!) is hier te bekijken.(Zoek op 13 februari 2023)
De uitzending is gemaakt in het Comenius College in Hilversum, van waaruit wij eerder deze reportage maakten, met nieuwsitems in NH Nieuws en de Gooi- en Eemlander.
Dit betreft de vanuit Erasmus+ Europees gefunde pilot van SmartPool, de doorontwikkeling van het succesvolle in 2018 in Nederland opgezette SmartPool project dat tot doel heeft: wiskunde m.b.v. poolbiljart niet alleen begrijpelijker maken, maar ook leuker. Onderdeel van deze doorontwikkeling is de vernieuwing van het SmartPool lesmateriaal, beter afgestemd op het curriculum en op verschillende leerniveaus.
Vanuit de KNBB gezien maakt dit project naast het maatschappelijke belang ook duidelijk: met SmartPool/SmartCue wordt door de KNBB volop geïnvesteerd in de toekomst van onze biljart-, pool- en snookerjeugd, om zo blijvend te zorgen voor nieuwe aanwas van spelers.

Smart Pool has started in Bulgaria
„Смарт пуул“ проектът по програма на Еразъм+, обединяващ по иновативен начин дисциплината Матеметика и билярд за деца, стартира днес в гр. Петрич. Той бе разработен и с помощта на Тони Чехларова и Жени Сендова, професори от Института по Математика към БАН.
В него участват 60 ученика от 3 училища в
гр. Петрич.
Училище Кочо Мавродиев с ръководител Запрян Кандиларов, училище Никола Вапцаров с ръководител Йорданка Минчева и училище Христо Смирненски с ръководител Николай Таушанов.
Билярдните занятия ще бъдат водени от Радослав Милков и Георги Божков.
Днес се състоя първият час, който се проведе в билярд клуб ВО&ВО общо с всички дечица.
Беше емоционален и вдъхновяващ ден, а за децата беше изключително интересно и впчатляващо да изучават математика по този различен начин!
Пожелаваме си успешно изпълнение на проекта, изпълнен с нови знания за децата и приятни преживявания!
Die Mathematik hinter dem Spiel– Billard-Pilotprojekt in Gera
Dreiecks- und Quadratzahlen, Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung, Reflexionsgesetz, Impulserhaltungssatz – mathematische und physikalische Zusammenhänge spielerisch lernen und begreifen und sich dabei bestenfalls auch noch von der Faszination des Billardsports anstecken lassen. Diese beiden Ziele vereint ein deutschlandweit bislang einmaliges Pilotprojekt, das nun im Schülerforschungszentrum (SFZ) Gera gestartet ist. „Smartpool“ wurde in den Niederlanden entwickelt und soll genau das leisten: Mathe und Physik anschaulich und den Billardsport bekannt machen.
Im Entstehungsland habe das von einem billardspielenden Mathelehrer entwickelte Konzept bereits Schule gemacht, indem es dort in die Schulen ging, erzählt Jens Schumann. „Ich bin selbst ein großer Freund praxisbezogenen Unterrichts“, sagt der Vorsitzende der Thüringer Billard-Jugend, dessen Heimatverein der TuS Osterburg Weida ist und der stolz ist, den deutschen Feldversuch nach Ostthüringen bekommen zu haben. Noch nicht in die Schule, aber ins Schülerforschungszentrum in der Tinzer Straße, wo das Projekt von Susanne Seupel und Florian Grunert betreut wird.
Billardtische, Queues und Kugeln im etwas kleineren Maßstab konnten dank europäischer Erasmus+-Förderung bereitgestellt werden, sagt Lukas Blondeel, Vorsitzender der Deutschen Billard Jugend, der die deutsche Projektleitung für „Smartpool“ innehat, das in mehreren europäischen Ländern gestartet ist. Die Betreuer am SFZ seien speziell geschult worden, sowohl in der Theorievermittlung, als auch im praktischen Pool-Billardspiel. „Das Projekt ist für zehn Wochen ausgelegt, wobei in den 90 Minuten pro Woche nicht streng zwischen Theorie und Praxis getrennt wird,sondern das ineinander übergeht“, sagt Susanne Seupel. Es richtet
sich an Schüler ab der 9. Klasse. In dieser Woche war der Auftakt, bis 5. Juli wird immer dienstags,15.30 Uhr zum Smartpool in die Tinzer Straße 39 eingeladen. Die Teilnahme ist kostenlos und Interessierte könnten nach kurzer Voranmeldung jederzeit einsteigen. Ebenso werden in den Sommerferien vom 1. bis 5. August die „Smartpool“-Lektionen in kompakter Form am SFZ angeboten. Das Pilotprojekt läuft laut Lukas Blondeel bis Sommer 2023 und wird vom europäischen Verband auch sportwissenschaftlich begleitet. „Man kann schon sagen, dass es unser erster Ausflug ins Sportliche ist“; sagt Susanne Seupel. Diese Form der spielerischen Vermittlung von naturwissenschaftlichen Themen passe sehr gut zum Schülerforschungszentrum. Nun hofft man auf reges Interesse. Auch bei den Vertretern der Billard-Verbände. „Wir haben ein riesengroßes Nachwuchsproblem im Billard“, sagt Jens Schumann, deshalb sei es wichtig, den Sport bekannt zu machen und zu zeigen, dass es mehr ist als nur ein Zeitvertreib in der Kneipe. Das geht schon mit den verschiedenen Spielarten los, die über das populäre Poolbillard hinausgehen und beispielsweise das aus dem Sportfernsehen bekannte Snooker oder das mit nur drei Kugeln und ohne Taschen gespielte Karambol umfassen.
Billard hilft im Übrigen nicht nur eim Veranschaulichen von mathematischen oder physikalischen Gesetzmäßigkeiten. Ein mathematisches Verständnis ist sicher auch nicht von Nachteil, wenn man ein guter Billardspieler werden möchte, sagt Lukas Blondeel.

We vroegen het ons anderhalf jaar geleden af: Gaat SmartPool internationaal?
Intussen kunnen we het antwoord geven – en dit antwoord is een volmondig JA. Zoals blijkt uit het vandaag verspreide persbericht door de EPBF is voor een periode van drie jaar via een Europese subsidie een bedrag van liefst € 422.950 vrijgemaakt om SmartPool een Europese variant te geven!
Drijvende kracht achter het baanbrekende SmartPool project, KNBB-directeur Willem La Riviere, is trots: “Prachtig dat ons SmartPool project zo enthousiast is ontvangen door de EPBF en nu een internationale opvolging gaat krijgen wat gefinancierd wordt vanuit het Erasmus+ programma. Onder regie van de EPBF gaan we samenwerken met vier andere nationale federaties, Mulier en Platform Wiskunde aan de internationale opvolging. Trots dat ons idee om poolen te combineren met wiskunde, wat we destijds met het EK 2018 samen met Erik van Haren hebben ontwikkeld, nu internationaal gaat!”

EPBF LAUNCHES SMARTPOOL
The project “Smart-Pool” was introduced by the Dutch Federation to the General Assembly of the EPBF in 2019 in Treviso / Italy. Already in 2018, first events were held during the „all-in-one“ European Championships of the EPBF in Veldhoven, The Netherlands.
After a first evaluation meeting after the European All-in-One Championship, it became clear that this project was getting a lot of interest from schools in the Netherlands. So much interest that it was even decided to expand the project within the Netherlands. It
was then also decided to try to roll out the „Smart-Pool“ project Europe-wide.

The Koninklijke Nederlandse Biljart Bond (Royal Dutch Billiards Association) and the EPBF then „joined forces“ and started making plans on what such a European approach could look like.
The project, which combines pool billiards and mathematics at a new level, was advertised to all EPBF members, and at the end 5 national member federations and the EPBF decided and declared that they will invest in this project. The 5 members are: Bulgaria, Finland, Germany, Cyprus, The Netherlands and the EPBF.
SmartPool Europe is a project of the European Pocket Billiard Federation, in cooperation with five, National billiard federations and mathematics organisations, all across Europe. The expertise and networks of the billiard federations, the mathematics organisations, combined with the research expertise of Mulier Institute guarantees good execution and dissemination.
Smart-Pool’s goal is to make beta courses more attractive through the combination with pool billiards. For schools, a curriculum has been developed in which the elements of pool have been translated into mathematical issues, for example by visualizing pool billiard situations.
The reason for this was the realization that children often don’t think math is ‚cool‘, but also doesn’t want to play billiards or know what billiards is. By turning both things with Smart-Pool into something positive, we strengthen the math/numeracy skills of youth and introduce them to pool billiards.

After the 5 above-mentioned members had declared their willingness to invest in this project, it was decided to apply for a European subsidy via the EPBF, as the European Governing body for pool and situated in the Netherlands, for this project through the European project institute „Erasmus +“. After submitting all the necessary paperwork, we have now received the joyful news that the project „Smart-Pool“ is eligible for a European subsidy.
Erasmus+ has now officially announced that the EPBF will receive an amount of € 422,950.00 in the next 3 years to roll out and supervise the project in these 5 countries.
The EPBF will be responsible for administration, facilitation and evaluation of the project and the national member federation will be responsible for the implementation and specifications in their country. Together we will contribute to the development of curricula, course material, website, learning platform and other resources needed. The EPBF board did nominate the EPBF treasurer, Mrs. Ine Helvik, as project leader for this prestigious project.
